Hire a paddleboard at Nichol End and explore Derwentwater.
Paddleboarding has quickly grown from a novel new sport to one of the most popular water sports in the UK. There’s a very good reason for that.
If you are feeling emotionally wrung out from life’s challenges right now, hire a board and just float peacefully across the water. There’s nothing more peaceful than gliding gracefully across the water with just the sound of gently lapping water for company. In the safe area that is free from launches, lie down on the board and let your worries drift away. (Don’t close your eyes though – you need to stay aware of other lake users). We’ve even had guests who practice yoga on their board.
If you are in need of a jolly good chuckle – hire with friends and you can guarantee an afternoon of laughter as you race to be the first to stand and challenge yourselves to wobble competitions to discover who can stay on for the longest.
If you want a full body workout, then engage those muscles and power paddle down the lake. It’s especially good for your core!
You don’t need any special abilities or requirements to come along and try paddleboarding. You can sit, kneel or stand on the board. Our instructors can give you basic tips on balance and manoeuvring the board

Children Welcome
Children can generally manage a Paddleboard by themselves from age 10. Our larger boards are suitable for carrying a child on the front and are super fun for using as a diving board. If you are unsure of how your child will manage, we can provide a towline. If there is a child under 16 in a group, then an adult over 18 must be present, within a minutes paddle from the child.
Younger children are very welcome but we will carefully risk assess the current and forecasted weather, lake conditions and abilities to ensure the safety of all customers. If the activity you have booked cannot proceed, then we will offer an alternative activity or a refund. If you wish to discuss your family’s requirements in advance of booking, please give us a call or send us an email.
Dogs Welcome
Well behaved and happy dogs are very welcome on our paddleboards and we love to see them enjoying the lake. Please make sure that you pick up their waste. If your dog is unhappy on the water or will dive around and make you capsize then be prepared to get wet.
What to bring
Freshly washed and sanitised wetsuits and buoyancy aids are included in your hire fee. We have a wide range of sizes and age ranges available. If you don’t want to wear one of our wetsuits, we’d advise either bringing your own or a change of clothes. Part of the fun of paddleboarding is getting wet, so please don’t wear, or take on the water, anything that you would mind getting wet or possibly muddy. Bouyancy aids are essential and must be worn at all times on the water.
Due to changes in our insurance, we have to insist on footwear being worn on the boards. Please bring suitable footwear that you don’t mind getting wet. Wet shoes or boots are ideal, but not essential.
A towel is very useful for drying off and getting changed.
A phone is an excellent safety precaution to have with you and cameras are a brilliant way to record the memories of your day out, but please remember that electronics and water do not mix. Please either bring or buy a dry bag or leave your valuables at home. Small dry bags are widely available online or we have a selection available for sale at Nichol End.
Safety Information
Buoyancy aids are provided for adults and older children. Life jackets are provided for babies and smaller children. These must be worn at all times on the water.
Wetsuits are available free of charge. These will be freshly washed and sanitised (so may be a bit damp). Please ensure you arrive in plenty of time to get changed.
